We are enjoying discovering all the great places to visit. This area of France is perfect for holidays with its long, hot summers and exciting snowy winters for all those ski-lovers! It is easy to get to with the airports of Carcassonne, Toulouse and Perpignan under two hours away and the nearest ski slope can be reached in less than half an hour. The town has a truly tranquil setting and, most importantly to us, is traditionally French.
There are multiple choices for day-trips offering a wide range of activities and cultures. These are just a few suggestions which you may find interesting:
Chateau de Montsegur
If you enjoy a hike, this is well worth the steep climb. Stunning views greet you when you reach the chateau. Please note, you will need to purchase a ticket for access to the ruins.
Camon
A historical village, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Mirepoix
The main attraction is the Place des Couverts: a wonderful main square surrounded by medieval houses and arcades.
Grotte Aguzou
A different experience to other caves you might have visited - there are no special effects, sounds or lighting, instead you will be given protective clothing and a light, and embark on an extensive underground hike! Pre-arranged in advance for small groups and individuals.
Foix
A medieval town with a castle (Chateau de Foix) that stands on a hill overlooking all below.
Limoux
A town full of festivals! Most well-known for the Carnival de Limoux, held for three months from January to March each year. The town is also renowned for its wonderful sparkling wine Blanquette de Limoux.
Quillan
On the edge of the river Aude. This is a pretty town with lovely squares in which you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat.
Rennes le Chateau
A small hilltop village full of history, ranging from fossilised dinosaur eggs to Neolithic finds.
Bugarach
A tiny village which became famous for being named as the only place to survive the Mayan apocalypse (back in 2012)!
Carcassone
A medieval fortress city with cobbled streets and ramparts providing panoramic views. Stroll along the paved streets in the citadel where you will find numerous shops, restaurants and museums to keep you entertained for many happy hours.
Andorra
A tiny, independent principality which offers duty-free shopping and wonderful ski resorts.
Perpignan
An abundance of history and culture awaits visitors to this city, along with stunning beaches within easy reach by car or bus.
Toulouse
The fourth largest city in France. A vibrant place that is full of exhibitions, concerts and festivals. Take a leisurely stroll along the narrow streets and squares to experience the engaging atmosphere of this friendly and welcoming city.

The Foire à la Brocante de Mirepoix is a three-day extravaganza that takes place just once a year over the Pentecost weekend. More than 200 vendors selling their goods means there is plenty to offer a wide variety of tastes.
